As we entered Cairo, we were shocked to discover the Pyramids of Giza are not way out in the desert, but are on the west edge of the city, just across the Nile River. A second shock was to see the Sphynx a few hundred yards from the pyramids. Adding a magnificent mosque visit in Cairo and a buffet lunch on the River Nile with a belly dancer for entertainment created an excursion package like no other. Since May 2010, the fires in Athens, Greece have subsided, while Egypt has been closed to responsible tourist traffic. Unfortunate but true!
