Following a harrowing two-plus day experience in the South China Sea (See Fire Aboard the Quest) we limped into Sandakan, Malasia tired, relieved to be safely near land, and anxious to get off the ship. The many ports we were scheduled to visit in Indonesia were set aside in favor of returning us all to our homes via Singapore. Two days in Sandakan awaiting flights were filled with Azamara’s free excursions in Sandakan and the surrounding jungle paradise. Sandakan’s community on stilts in the bay was a surprise highlight of one excursion, a development uniquely picturesque in world travels. It is featured below. Don’t ask about sewage in Sandakan’s Bay Homes. It is gravity fed!
