Santorini is a Greek Isle like no other. It is an ancient volcano in which the center collapsed, causing a huge caldera filled with Mediterranean Sea. The picturesque villages are perched precariously along the top inside edge of the crater several hundred feet above the water. The whitewashed buildings, blue domes and narrow walkways set the villages apart from all others. The trip from the water’s edge to the perch on top, or back, is a white knuckle ordeal on winding roads, cable cars, or on donkeys. The donkeys are not recommended, but white knuckles are routine.
