Suzhou, is advertised as the Venice of China. It is an hour’s train ride up the river from Shanghai. The countryside is fascinating along the river delta. The Venice portion of Suzhou is novel, with its homes built along canals, the folks whose front yards need no mowing, and the transportation within is by foot or boat. Unlike Venice, waste management leaves much room for improvement.
